Why Fancy Text Shows Up as Squares (and How to Fix It)
You paste beautiful cursive text into a chat, and your friend sees □□□□□. Before you panic: your phone is not broken, and the text is not corrupted. Those empty boxes have a name — “tofu” — and a simple explanation.
What Those Boxes Actually Mean
An empty box means your device’s font does not contain that character. Remember, fancy text is made of real Unicode characters (see our Unicode vs real fonts guide). If the character exists in Unicode but your phone’s font never learned to draw it, you get a placeholder box instead.
Why It Happens
- Old operating systems. Unicode adds characters every year; a phone from 2018 simply never received newer glyphs.
- Rare style blocks. Common styles (bold, italic, cursive) are in every modern font. Exotic ones — certain bubble variants, rare symbols — are the first to go missing.
- The sender is fine. Boxes appear on the receiving device only. The sender’s newer phone renders everything perfectly, which is why they had no idea.
How to Fix It
- Update the OS and the app. System updates bring new fonts with new glyphs — this fixes most cases.
- Switch to a common style. Bold, italic, and script variants of the mathematical alphabets work on virtually every device made in the last decade.
- Test before you post. Paste your text into our compatibility checker to see how much of it is exotic Unicode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my phone broken?
No. It is just missing a font glyph. A software update almost always resolves it.
Will everyone see boxes, or just some people?
Only people on older devices or outdated apps. Most of your audience sees the text exactly as intended.
